Key points of construction and installation

(1) It is not easy to install the ultraviolet generator on the outlet pipe close to the water pump to prevent damage to the quartz glass tube and lamp tube caused by water hammer when the pump is stopped.

(2) The ultraviolet generator should be installed strictly in the direction of water inlet and outlet.

(3) The ultraviolet generator should have a foundation that is not less than 100mm above the building floor.

(4) The ultraviolet generator and its connecting pipes and valves should be firmly fixed, and the ultraviolet generator should not bear the weight of the pipes and accessories.

(5) The installation of ultraviolet generators should be easy to disassemble, inspect and maintain, and materials that affect water quality and hygiene should not be used at all pipeline connections.

The ultraviolet disinfection process has many advantages but also disadvantages, with the main drawback being the inability to maintain continuous disinfection of the pipeline network. There are certain differences in the use of ultraviolet disinfection technology between Europe and North America. In some water plants in Europe, such as the Netherlands, Austria, and Germany, drinking water is disinfected with ultraviolet light and directly enters the water supply network. According to statistics, most water plants in the Netherlands use ultraviolet disinfection alone, and there is no residual chlorine at the end of the network. The reason for this is that the pipeline network in Europe is in good condition, with relatively small pipeline systems and low organic carbon that can be biodegraded in water. In order to avoid residual chlorine producing disinfection by-products in the pipeline network, ultraviolet disinfection is often used separately. Another reason is that these European countries are usually located in higher latitude areas with consistently low water temperatures, resulting in weak microbial regrowth ability in the pipeline network. The drinking water regulations in North America stipulate that there must be a certain amount of residual chlorine in tap water to control secondary pollution in the pipeline network. The situation in our country is more similar to that in the United States. When the assimilatable organic carbon (AOC) of organisms is below 20 μ g/L, no chlorine can be added after ultraviolet radiation. When the AOC is above 50 μ g/L, residual chlorine needs to be maintained at 0.3mg/L or above. The municipal water supply system using surface water sources in China needs to combine ultraviolet radiation with chlorine and chloramines to ensure the microbial safety of the water quality in the pipeline network due to the high organic matter content in the water. However, small-scale water supply systems in villages and towns that use groundwater may only use ultraviolet disinfection, especially in areas with lower water temperatures in the north, provided that the design and equipment are qualified. The research results of the Eleventh Five Year Plan for Science and Technology Support also fully prove this point.
